Signs of Anorexia

Posted by: admin  :  Category: anorexia

All types of media information advices the population more and more often to eat healthy and exercise daily to avoid obesity and other nutritional issues. Still, the message seems to be misunderstood as many persons, especially young girls become obsessed with loosing weight and counting calories; this is the negative part of the media tendencies and leads to the apparition of many eating disorders and dangerous physical and emotional consequences.

The most common and vital symptom of anorexia seems to be the irrational and uncontrolled fear of weight gain and body fat. This is however associated also with the will to become thinner and thinner even while loosing normal weight and becoming underweight.

Patients suffering from anorexia deny their problems and refuse to see the danger they expose their body to. These persons are usually very preoccupied with calories, fat grams and weight and become often angry and irascible when help is offered. The constant denial of having a major eating disorder turns into a difficult disease and also leads to a separation of the person from the society that is willing to help.

Warning signs of Anorexia seem sometimes very hard to observe as patients do their best to hide and deny any symptom or sign of their condition. They make huge efforts to avoid their family and friends to observe something is wrong as they are certain they are very fat, must loose weight and no one can help.

Anorexia patients refuse to keep at least a minimal accepted weight for their own age and height and become dramatically thinner every day; this is associated with a poor self image and low self respect. They seem to find excuses every time for skipping meals, eat very few foods only with little calories, weigh frequently and are attentive to the smallest weight change. The tendency of wearing large clothes is due to the need of hiding their body, excessive obsessive training program occupies a lot of time in their lives. Time is also controlled by the need of looking carefully into the mirror, looking for flaws.

Anorexia sufferers find excuses for skipping gatherings implying food and continuously complain about how fat they are. The most dramatic physical signs of the condition are low sexual appetite in men and irregular menstrual periods in women.

The two basic types of anorexia are:

1. Classic restrictive Anorexia involves very little calorie intake and excessive rapid weight loss. The food income is mostly insufficient to maintain normal vital functions.

2. Purging Anorexia works through self induced vomiting and excessive use of laxatives. This is called bulimic anorexia and associate low food intake with the need of purging after meals. Most patients with anorexia develop symptoms of additional bulimia.

Why isn't extreme body building considered a mental disorder but anorexia and others is?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: anorexia

Ever wonder this? Obviously anorexia nervosa is a recognized mental disorder that can lead to death. But, why isn't extreme bodybuilding? You know where men take steroids and looking so unaturally buff and extremely unhealthy. I mean obviously anorexia nervosa and exteme bodybuilding are caused by emotional, biological, and environmental factors. But I just don't understand why extreme body building isn't considered a mental disorder? Is it because you don't have a chance of dying, unlike anorexia?

It is. Its called bigorexia.

Obsessed with the Perfect Body: Bigorexia

Interestingly, both male bulimics and body builders seem to be equally over-concerned with weight and shape. Both feel that body shape is just as important as friends or work. Furthermore, distortions in thinking can be seen by the fact that body builders are just as unhappy with their bodies as non athlete male bulimics, which leads many to anabolic steroid use to get bigger, leaner, and more muscular. These men feel too small and want to increase the size of various upper body parts at any cost. It is no wonder that some have termed this obsession as "reverse anorexia," "bigorexia," or "muscle dysmorphia." Researchers believe that this is a form of body dysmorphic disorder, a disorder whereby a person feels they are physically flawed despite appearing perfectly normal. This may also be related to the condtion called obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is on the spectrum that includes bulimia nervosa.

Possibilities of Treating Anorexia

Posted by: admin  :  Category: anorexia

Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized mainly by an unreal perception of the weight. Persons who suffer of this physical and psychological affection believe that they are fat even though they are not at all like that. Anorexia requires an urgent treatment because it produces serious and irreplaceable damages and can even lead to death.

Not everyone who does not look fat is categorized as anorexic. Anorexic people are those who do not have the adequate weight for their height and age and still believe that they are fat.

Treatment is necessary because in women anorexia produces the loss of menstruation or an irregular menstruation, meaning infertility. Men might also develop hormone problems, meaning that the sex hormones level will decrease. Young girls who suffer of anorexia and do not follow a proper treatment will not grow up as they have to for their age and the menstruation will fail to come in their cases.

Treating anorexia is quite difficult because patients generally refuse to believe that they are skinny and that they must gain weight. All they see on their body is fat and they refuse to eat. A good treatment will make a change in the patient’s way of thinking and they will begin to have a more positive view about their body.

Anorexia doe not give only a lack of menstruation; it gives depression, fears, irritability and strange behavior along with isolation. Some patients divide their meals into small pieces and categorize their food as safe and dangerous to eat. They are psychologically affected and this makes the treatment quite difficult.

Treatment is individualized because every patient has a specific issue that caused anorexia and treatment must first solve that issue in order to solve the whole case. One person might be afraid of new situations and changes in life and another might be afraid of growing up and assuming responsibilities. This is why treatment is specific to every patient and is not the same for all people.

Family and friends must encourage the ill person to go for a treatment and must support it emotionally during that period because it will be hard for it to get over this situation all by itself.

Nowadays there are a lot of special anorexia treatment facilities all over the world who have personnel well trained in dealing with your eating disorder and will know what to do to make you recover as soon as possible. Nobody said this is easy but it is best to try it because you will not get better by yourself.
